动词 start 后面接动词时，

可以接动词不定式（to play ) -- start to play xxx.

也可以接动名词（playing）--start playing xxx；两种方式意思一样

原句答案：

2、At the age of ten, he started playing the piano.

--- 他十岁开始弹钢琴。

playing和to play都没有问题，只是意思有所区别而已，playing表示十岁时，他开始弹钢琴（已经弹了），to play还没有开始弹，准备开始弹钢琴

start作为及物动词，后面可跟动名词或不定式，没有限制，一般还是跟动名词形式的比较多。
